Still from Office Thing

This year’s programme brings together films from the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Brazil — from queer horror and cursed video games to jungle witchcraft, office nightmares and a robot vacuum with literary ambitions.

They are very different films, but together they show just how wide fantastic cinema from Latin America can be.

Don’t Come Out / No Salgas

Dominican Republic · dir. Victoria Linares Villegas
29 October · 14:00 · Kino 2

Liz is a closeted medical student still grieving the violent death of her girlfriend Wendy.

Convinced that the violence around her may be rooted in homophobia, she tries to make herself less visible. She dates a man, keeps quiet and tries to move through the world without attracting attention.

Don’t Come Out turns homophobia into something close to a curse moving through a community, where fear is passed on, repeated and reinforced until hiding starts to feel like the only safe option.

Gringa Bitch

Colombia · dir. Thomas Leibrandt
3 November · 20:00 · Kino 3

A European doctor is kidnapped by a guerrilla group and taken deep into the Colombian jungle.

Being held hostage is already a problem. Then local witchcraft and supernatural forces begin to enter the picture.

Gringa Bitch moves between survival thriller and supernatural horror, as its protagonist is forced to work out what is real, what is dangerous and whether waiting to be rescued is actually an option.

Game Over

Mexico · dir. Carlos Marín
31 October · 23:00 · Kino 1

After her sister dies under mysterious circumstances, Rebeca begins investigating the video game she had been playing.

Her search leads to an urban legend about a cursed cartridge containing Goggi, a creature that hunts anyone who releases it.

With practical effects, prosthetics, animatronics and a lot of blood, Game Over is a throwback to 1980s creature horror.

Also: yes, this is the one the festival director had to fast-forward.
