Still from Big City Pizza

From existential mice and skeleton pizza delivery to demonic skin, doomed romance and creatures in the snow, animation appears in many different corners of this year’s programme.

Two animated features come to Lund Fantastic in 2026, while nine animated shorts are nominated across four of the festival’s competitions. Together they make a good starting point for anyone who wants to explore animation at the festival — although they have very little else in common.

Decorado

Spain / Portugal · dir. Alberto Vázquez
1 November · 20:00 · Kino 1
Méliès d’Argent Competition

Arnold is a middle-aged mouse having an existential crisis. Increasingly convinced that the world around him is fake, he begins to see manipulation everywhere — in his neighbours, his doctors, his friends and the all-powerful corporation ALMA.

Decorado combines surreal animation, black comedy and existential horror in a story about depression, conformity and the suspicion that somebody else may be writing the rules of your life.

A decade after Birdboy: The Forgotten Children screened at Lund Fantastic, Alberto Vázquez returns with another work of adult animation — this time competing for the Méliès d’Argent.

Big City Pizza

USA · dir. Dusty Saunders
2 November · 22:30 · Kino 2

Boney is a skeleton. Boney delivers pizza. Unfortunately, it is a complicated night to be delivering pizza.

As the city prepares for the Omniball Championship, Boney moves from one increasingly peculiar customer to another, encountering the inhabitants and hazards of a very unusual city.

Created in Blender, Big City Pizza is animated as one continuous, unbroken take and seen entirely through Boney’s eyes. The result combines first-person perspective, visual comedy and an impressive amount of animated world-building.
