This year, Tales of the fantastic are all about changing perspectives, sometimes by creating new worlds and others by rediscovering the old ones. In these films reality is erased and recreated, protagonists are battling with their deepest fears, but thankfully love still has the power to bend spacetime in the end. The filmmakers are keen to remind us that growing up is definitely not a fairytale, curiosity is the quickest shortcut to meet danger and finally, taking care of your inner garden isn’t something you can afford to neglect. More often than not, these stories grapple with trauma and how we humans confront it. Just don’t get fooled, they don’t claim to have any easy answers, but they only prefer to leave the door open to interpretations and spark discussions that will linger long after the screening ends.
