We once again bid you welcome to the opening of Lund Fantastic Film Festival in person! This year we have turned a little francophile, with a great selection of french genre films, both in short and longer format. So what better way to start off this year’s festival with a stunning french science fiction, Paul W.R’s Last Journey.

In the post-apocalyptic wasteland a red moon has appeared in the sky. The moon is excessively exploited for its energy resources. Suddenly the red moon changes its course and threatens existence on earth. The only hope of saving earth and humanity is the enigmatic Paul W.R. (played by Hugo Becker), the most talented astronaut of his generation. But a few hours before the start of the Great Mission, Paul disappears. Paul has discovered the secret of the red moon and the reason why he can’t destroy the moon.

Paul is now widely hunted, throughout a deserted hostile France.

Director Romain Quirot has most definitely watched a sci-fi or two in his life and the execution of his first feature film shows off his and his team’s detailed understanding of the classics, both in terms of world-building and narrative beats. Paul W.R.’s Last Journey, a feature-length adaptation of his own 2015 short, has familiar and comforting scenery, almost as if we are in a parallel universe to Star Wars and Mad Max, but the film also manages to be unique, developing its own story world with stunning visuals and great performances. While it’s always pleasant to see Jean Reno on the big screen, Paul Hamy, playing Paul W.R’s brother Eliott, delivers a chilling performance. He makes for a convincing villain who flashes a smile even Pennywise would envy.

Paul W.R.’s Last Journey is exactly the type of sci-fi entertainment you absolutely want to see on the biggest screen possible.
