Hunter is a pregnant housewife played by a mesmerizing Haley Bennet, who is having the most difficult time being seen and heard by the people in her life. Drowning in an overwhelmingly patriarchal and manipulative household, she finds herself with the strong urge to ingest all kinds of objects, almost to the point of no return, in order to take control of her own individuality. Eventually, her oppressive husband and his people ‘force’ her to run away in order to be able to face her compulsion and whatever hides behind it.
With Hunter, first-time director Carlo Mirabella-Davis portrays a very well-rounded character who evolves according to her circumstances and easily earns the viewer’s empathy. Working from a simple premise we have all seen before, he tightens the screws and puts everyone on edge. Swallow is a universal and relevant story centered on a finely wrought depiction of mental illness that won’t leave you indifferent – an international festival favorite and a must-see!
