MÉLIÈS SHORT FILMS – Online Screening

October 28 @ 17:00 - November 1 @ 23:59

- 4EURO

We are now presenting the short films, in competition for the Méliès d’argent. The winner will go on to compete for the Méliès d’Or at Sitges Film Festival.

Méliès binds together our affiliation of fantastic festivals and it’s a great way for european films to compete and gain recognition beyond borders.

This year’s selection features addictions gone rampant, psychedelic substances, abusive relationships, a child’s view on traditions, cultural exploration crossing borders, alien messages and hotlines for the paranormal.

Méliès Short Films 2021

Ad Lib // 2020 // France // Drama / Thriller / Fantasy // 11 min 6 sec

Directed by Joseph Catté

Opening with a karaoke party, the sing-along subtitles magically follow the couple, Max and Julie, as they make their way back to Julie’s place. Once inside her apartment it becomes clear that there is something sinister lurking beneath the surface of their relationship. Ad Lib explores the dynamics of an abusive relationship and the importance of language and how words can be used to hurt others in a very real way.

Hungry Joe // 2020 // UK // Horror / Drama / Social realism // 22 min 30 sec

Directed by Paul Nicholas Holbrook, Sam Dawe

The birth of their baby is not all they wished for it to be. There’s something very wrong with the child. He’s just so hungry, and no amount of feeding seems to be enough to satisfy him…

Lussevaka // 2020 // SE / UK // Drama / Fantasy // 8 min 30 sec // Swedish Premiere

Directed by Johanna Sutherland

Haven’t we all as children been bored at a social gathering with mainly adults? That’s what happens to a young girl at a celebration of Saint Lucy's Day. However, she is about to form a special, perhaps supernatural bond with an elderly woman, who feels just as excluded as the little girl. Writer/Director Johanna Sutherland has previously worked primarily in sound recording and pays special attention to the sound design in this impressive directorial debut.

Directed by Hugo Caby, Antoine Dupriez, Aubin Kubiak, Lucas Lermytte and Zoé Devise

When the ice starts melting, the polar bears have to flee to the land of the brown bears, only to find that they’re not welcome there. Never have knitted polar bears been as heartbreaking as in this film, which combines issues of global warming, refugees, and animal welfare into an unmissable whole.

Migrations // 2020 // Belgium // Sci-Fi / Social / Fantastic // 14 min 30 sec // Swedish Premiere

Directed by Jerome Peters

Aliens are coming to Earth from the corner of the universe to deliver their friendly message to humans. Only humans don’t like strangers messing around in their land and treat them with hostility. A pitch black comedy with a universal message.

Polter // 2019 // Spain // Horror / Comedy // 11 min 33 sec // Swedish Premiere

Directed by Álvaro Vicario

José faces a paranormal event that breaks into his home. As he fights for his life against the supernatural powers, José will have to discover the secret behind the phenomena if he wishes to regain control of his home. An absurd horror comedy about the secrets we hide from ourselves.

Directed by Johannes Magnus Aule

A trio of friends decide to visit a rave in a remote location. Upon entering the dark place with flashing lights of varying colors, a young woman tells them about a mysterious powder. All three decide to take it. A psychedelic horror experience follows as the drug releases their inner demons.
