Swedish premiere/Opening film
** Release date: October 29 **
Nestled deep in a primeval forest, lumberjack Red and his beloved Mandy have seemingly secured their own slice of paradise. Yet heaven on earth is cut short once a maniacal cult takes an interest in Mandy. Aided by supernatural forces they whisk away the center of Red’s universe, leaving him for dead in the wake of a violent assault. When he awakens with nothing left to lose and his senses jarred, Red gives in to seething rage, hell-bent on vengeance.
A breakout sensation at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Mandy is the latest unnerving vision to burst forth from the mind of Beyond the Black Rainbow creator Panos Cosmatos. A psychedelic and beautiful nightmare that expertly submerges viewers in the protagonist’s darkening psyche, the film deservedly went on to claim a spot in Cannes’ prestigious Directors’ Fortnight. If the phantasmagorical visuals don’t haunt you for days to come, Nicolas Cage’s surreal performance or Jóhann Jóhannsson’s final score, a true testament to his skill, are sure to linger long after the end credits roll.
“Were scientists to engineer an uncut, 100-proof cult sensation, it would probably look, sound, and kick like this” – A.A. Dowd, AV Club
