Blueberry

Mike Blueberry is the marshal of a small quiet city at the border of the Indian territory. But everything changes when a mysterious killer, Wally Blount, sets the city on fire. He is looking for a secret Indian treasure hidden in the Holy Mountains. Blueberry gets on his track with the help of Runi, an Indian shaman whom he grew up with. The two men must prevent the stranger to enter the sanctuary. But there Mike will also have to face his own demons...

The feature film Blueberry is an adaptation of the eponym French strip cartoon by Moebius (alias Jean Giraud, who also worked on Luc Besson's Fifth Element) and Jean-Michel Carlier: 27 volumes split into 10 cycles, the last episode dating from 2003; Jan Kounen's film is based more precisely on the third cycle, "L'Or de la Sierra". Though it is a real transposition of the Hollywood western genre into a cartoon, it stands as the only one of this kind, as Jan Kounen's Blueberry does.

The duet Jan Kounen/Vincent Cassel (Irreversible, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Crimson Rivers, La Haine) turns out to be as effective as it has been in Kounen's first feature film Dobermann (1996); backed up with Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers, Enough, Starsky & Hutch) and screened for the second time with her father Geoffrey Lewis (for the first time in Way of the Gun) and Ernest Borgnine, whose career started already in 1951(!).

This is a kind of mystical western that has to be seen!
