Martyrs wins 2009 Méliès d'Or

The award was handed out at the Méliès d'Or award ceremony during Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain on the evening of October 5th 2009, with director Pascal Laugier in attendance.

Previous winners include among others; Let The Right One In/Låt den Rätte Komma In by Tomas Alfredson (Sweden), The Day of the Beast/El Dia de la Bestia by Alex de la Igelsias (Spain), The Nameless/Los sin Nombre by Juame Balagueró (Spain), Possessed/Besat by Anders Rönnow-Klarlund (Denmark), The Green Butchers/De Grönne Slagtere by Anders Thomas Jensen (Denmark), Princess by Anders Morgenthaler (Denmark), Adam's Apples/Adams Aebler by Anders Thomas Jensen (Denmark) as well as Code 46 by Michael Winterbottom (UK).

In existence since 1996, the Méliès d’Or Award is a unique competition: it is the only film competition organised between collaborating film festivals in Europe. The competition is open to both features and short films.

The Méliès d’Or Competition for features is organised by all the affiliated members of the Federation. Each Competition cycle takes approximately one year and is organised in two stages. In the first stage, each participating festival organises a Competition during its event, at the end of which a European film is awarded with a Méliès d’Argent. This film is automatically nominated to take part in the Méliès d’Or Competition. Once all the affiliated members have awarded their own Méliès d’Argent, the next festival on the calendar organises the Méliès d’Or Competition and Award Ceremony.

Nine feature films competed for the 2009 Méliès d'Or - Best European Fantastic Film. These films have all won a Méliès d’Argent at one of the affiliated members of the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation.

AMER awarded the Blade Award at LIFFF

The award has been named The Blade and will be handed out annually to a festival favourite. A film that the programmers think should be lifted and hailed and that deserves to get a special mention.

The Award is an honerary award, but the filmmakers of Amer, Bruno Forzani and Hélène Cattet also received the actual price, a real kitchen knife(!) just before the screening of the last film at the festival, which fittingly enough was Argento's Giallo.

Bruno Forzani commented the award and the festival: "We wish that we will collect this kind of special awards to complete our panoply of giallo's assassino's knives!"

The award will from now on be handed out annually.

Amer had it's official world premiere here in Lund. The film is just as much an homage to long past film art as it’s a new breed standing on its own feet. In the film we get to follow Ana from childhood to adulthood. To its great advantage, Amer doesn't convey an apparent story or provide direct answers, rather it seduces you slowly with a razorsharp stroke.

A Town Called Panic won the Silver Méliès

Directors Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar will in October travel to Sitges in Spain to compete with nine other Silver Méliès winners for the Golden Méliès - the grand award for best European fantastic movie.

In the Jury we found directors Anders Banke and Fredrik Boklund and actress Nina Zanjani. Their motivation was:

"We had a hard time putting words to what we have experienced since this film is so very different, it borders on being unique. Being a weird film for the whole family, it has a fantastic eye for details and not a single dead second. It is almost unfair to the other movies to compete with one who breaks all rules and silent agreements that all other movies have to follow. This movie wins the LIFFF Silver Méliès award 2009 because if you should only see one more movie before you die - it's A Town Called Panic!"

A Town Called Panic att LIFFF

...

Winner of the newly installed award for best non-European movie, The Siren, was Australian movie Van Diemen's Land. Director Johathan Auf Der Heide used the cruel but true story about eight convicts who escape from a prison colony on a remote island and find themselves in a strong drama you shall not soon forget.

The Jury consisted of Jenni Ukkonen, who arranges Finnish film festival Espoo Cine, Rikke Schubart, Danish author and senior lecturer at Syddansk Universitet and Shade Rupe, author and has arranged several film festivals in the United States. Their motivation was:

"The film that most captivated us out of the eight fantastic films this week takes us on a journey into the heart of nature, a nature that looks so calm from afar, and is so dark and cold once we're trapped inside it. Stark and terrifying, the winning film is illustrated not only with crisp cinematography, it's also told with the sound of trees creaking in the wind, the sound of hunger being sated, and the sound of men plotting each other's deaths.

Realist, natural and intense, the film's performances transcend acting---we fully believe in each characters' physical struggle and painful guilt. Their faces are strong and worn... not beautiful in a conventional Hollywood way. The film's straightforward plot allows the actors to become their characters and we can't help but believe in their doomed plight.

The Gaelic narration is both wonderful and strange, taking us back in time and into the unfeeling inhumanity of nature. A filmic language can take us out of our seats and out of our own problems, and a language spoken can take us away to another land and time. The language of tonight's winning film took all of us into the heart of our very own darkness. We are quite pround to announce the winner of this year's Lund Fantastisk Film Festival, Jonathan Auf Der Heide's Van Diemen's Land."

Van Diemen's Land at LIFFF

Winner of the prestigious Audience Choice Award, that is decided by the audience through a grading system after every screening, goes to Moon, directed by Duncan ZH Jones. Audience Choice Award for Short Films goes to Virtual Dating, directed by Katia Olivier.

Raymond Kan gave us lots of laughter

The screening of Diagnosis: Death was both hair-rising and entertaining at the same time which made the audience laugh. After the screening it was time for the Q&A and Raybon Kan was greeted with a flood of questions regarding everything from the budget to Kan´s qualifications in bed.

The script for the movie was written by Kan himself and the director, co-producer, Jason Stutter at a local pub. It took about a moth to write it but according to Kan it felt like a much longer time. At the pub they also came up with the idea for the nurses death in the end: ”There were stools in the pub…”. They thought that it was a new and comic way to kill characters, but at the same time they didn't want to make it to bloody like a splatter movie.

A lot of the questions asked was about the shooting scene: was it a actual hospital and was it really situated next to a graveyard? Raybon answered smiling that the cemetery wasn't a part of the story until they arrived at the scene, ”You can´t make up stuff like that!”. And the hospital was a real, old abandoned hospital, which Kan described as a “Horrible Experience!”. Then he also had in mind that more than half of the crew got really, really sick, witch lead to several schedule changes. His advise to the audience was: “Never go to hospitals - you will die!”. After the shootings was fished the hospital was demolished.

Someone in the audience asked if he had worked as a English teacher like his character in the film, and the answer to that was no, he had been a lawyer in his previous career. A truth that surprised and brought a lot of laughter. This is the first time Raybon work as an actor and he found that it was more difficult than he imagined, but most of the time it was fun and instructive. The idea of him doing one of the leading rolls wasn't something that he had planned for a long time, he knew that he was going to be at the shooting scene every day so he could might as well do that to.

At the moment there is no future film project planned, but if they would to a sequel to Diagnosis: Death they would call it Diagnosis: Pregnancy. He couldn't reveal the actual budget for the film but told us that it was less than 1 million dollar, considerable less...

We'd like to thank Raybon Kan for a fantastic film experience and a open-hearted Q&A!

Fredrik Hiller told us about him and God

Psalm 21 is the next big horror hit in Sweden, even if it will screen no earlier than 2010 in cinemas. Director Fredrik Hiller doesn't mention the word "horror" but rather uses the term "psychological thriller" when he tries to desribe Psalm 21. But the end result is the same for the audience; a cold chill along the spine...

In many ways, Psalm 21 is a movie about Fredrik Hiller himself and his journey in life. During a stay in the US was the first time he really encountered religion and once back home in Sweden again, he started to examine his own religiousness in various ways. A script started to grow in the back of his mind and slowly a short film took shape. This, in turn, grew to a feature and after many hard years we could enjoy the end result on its world premiere here att Lund International Fantastiv Film Festival - and what a premiere! Fredrik Hiller and his actors Jonas Malmsjö and Per Ragnar was in top shape during the whole evening.

Psalm 21 is the story about Henrik, a young priest from Stockholm who receieves a message about his father's death under mysterious circumstances in a small community in northern Sweden. Tormented by constant night mares and a bad relationship with his own son, Henrik decides to drive to the village to sort out the tragic death of his father. Once there, he realizes that there are strong and dark forces in play that his faith has long ago told him not existed - and a dark truth wants to be free. Psalm 21 is written with a strong christian theme in the background and the church's monopoly in God is questioned: "Some choose to view God as a kind of Al Capone contaminated by rabies, I have a somewhat different view of him", the director explained afterwards.

Fredrik Hiller himself plays a minor part as coroner in his movie - something he is not a stranger to as he has been an actor on stage most of his carreer. As an answer to the question if he saw that as an advantaget for him, he referred to the great masters of theatre who very often were actors themselves - this trend is really not new, he pointed out. The important part is that the director let's his actors do their own thing and doesn't try to force them to play they way he himself would have played it.

To Hiller, Psalm 21 has been a personal little purgatory where he could set things straight with his demons. It is his own feelings that the character Henrik portrays; fear of life after death or the fear of old relatives coming to visit him from beyond the grave. Jonas Malmsjö, who plays Henrik in the movie, quickly wrestles the microphone from him and replies: "Well, congratulations Fredrik. I myself had to sleep in the old cabin from the movie for several nights alone during the shoots. I am just about to begin dealing with my own demons I got from there, but I'm happy that it all turned out so well for you!", he joked.

Per Ragnar, the elder in the crew, plays a hard role as Henrik's deceased father - who's also a preacher. This man was a traditional and very judging and stern priest when he lived and someone from the audience asked him if he thinks it is hard to always play evil and disgusting roles: "I don't look at it that way; is black or white, good or evil - the role I try to enter is often the role of a lonely and weak person that merely seeks confirmation and meaning" he answered and compared this role with the one he had in Let the right one in. "And, after all, even though I have been playing nice parts in forty of my fifty years in this business, people still remember me as playing Adolf Hitler or Sten Frisk (from Swedish tv-series Tre Kronor)", he said with a laughter.

In Psalm 21, Per Ragnar, gives the audience a powerful interpretation of a mean old man who likes to manipulate, not seldom by not even opening his mouth. Yesterday at the world premiere at LIFFF he took the microphone to start answering questions - but nevertheless let it hang by the hip and did not say a word into it. An experienced actor, as himself, trusts the power of his own voice and knows that people will hear him anyway. He's a cool guy, that Per Ragnar.

A magnificent weekend with Enzo G. Castellari

Enzo G. Castellari was brought up in the world of cinema. He spent his childhood accompanying his father, the director Marino Girolami. Inglorious Bastards (Quel maledetto treno blindato, 1978) was Castellari's big break through and casting Bo Svenson for the lead role was very successful. As this film is highly topical today with Tarantino's “remake” just out, we wanted to offer the original here at FFF. After the screening Castellari spoke openly about his life in cinema and gave answers to questions from the audience.

Castellari prefers classical ways of using special effects in his films and tries to limit the amount of modern technology. He works very thoroughly with creating a sense of realism in his films by, for example, shooting one scene in just one take. To the FFF audience he carefully pointed out that he is not making the films by himself. They are made by the whole film crew together. On site he tries to work closely together with the actors, and goes carefully through the process from script to cutting with the crew so that all parties can create their own versions of the character. Changing the script on a proposal by the actors is not a problem.

When asked about how he relates to Quentin Tarantino's interpretation of his film, with Inglorious Basterd from 2009, Castellari replies that he feels very happy and moved by Tarantino choosing his film among millions of others that likewise could be used as inspiration. Castellari also wanted to make sure that Tarantino's film is not a remake, it's a typical Taratinoesque film all by it self.

When Quentin Tarantino arranged a party celebrating the 30-year anniversary of Inglorious Bastards in Los Angeles, a big cake was made resembling the original movie poster. Castellari and Bo Svenson had the honor of cutting the first pieces. Bo went straight for his own head.

After watching the film print that FFF had gotten hold of, Castellari cried out that it was a fantastic copy. He ended the Q&A saying that, if given the possibility of changing the movie he wouldn't: ”I would do everything exactly the same again!”.

On early Monday morning, Castellari rushed through Lund, heading to the airport and onward to Rome, where he would meet with Tarantino on the Italian premiere of Inglorious Basterds. We thank Enzo G. Castellari for a fantastic weekend at FFF and are looking forward to his new project “Caribbean Basterds”!

Jake West revisits FFF and brings with him horror and humor

Jake West amuses the audience with his third visit to the festival. At half past twelve on Saturday night, in the exclusive festival tent (after a couple of low key movies), was it finally time to meet the comedy-horror-maestro and see his fourth contribution to the film festival, Doghouse (prior entries being Razor Blade Smile (1998), Whacked (2002), Evil Aliens (2005)). Jake himself introduced the film by saying that there would be ”no more slow movies this evening!”. And he was right...

The much appreciated movie was followed by a series of questions from the audience. Each got a straight and humorous answer from the director.

The idea for Doghouse was born when the girlfriend of the script writer Dan Schaffer was ill. Schaffer thought that his girlfriend looked like a zombie, lying there in her bead. The story was born...

West received a slightly edgy question about product placement in the film, case in point being a certain well known razor producing company shown on a giant billboard in the fiction village Moodley. “We didn't have a lot of money, but needed a billboard. This was the only way to finance it. We tried to do the best of the situation, so we wanted to choose a product that was a strong symbol for men and manhood. That way we could use the destruction of the billboard as a way of symbolizing the fall of manhood”.

This, the fall of manhood, is a theme that is found throughout the movie. West points out the different female zombies seen in the movie, each representing a primal fear for men. The bride symbolizes the fear of commitment, the hair dresser with her scissors flailing in front of her, is a symbol for the male castration anxiety.

Doghouse, the title of the movie, is short for being “In the Doghouse”, an expression for having trouble with your respective other and being on their bad side. All of the male actors are in the doghouse – even before they are chased down by swarms of female zombies!

West is an experienced low-budget film maker, but for Doghouse he had a slightly bigger budget which meant that he didn't have to focus on the smaller things - a relief as he put it. The film music is composed by Richard Wells, whom West has worked together with two times before: Whacked (2002) and Evil Aliens (2005).

When asked about what movie he would like to do next, West answers: “I would like to do more movies with interesting monster like werewolves and ghosts”.

Jake West edited the movie to be 96 minutes long, but was forced by the production company to shorten the movie to its current 89 minutes. He also wanted the re-work the sound mix. The missing scenes give a deeper glimpse in how the picturesque village is turned from utopia to zombie breeding ground. He ended the Q&A with a promise to deliver a director's cut, if the movie sells well enough.

We hope and believe that Jake West will return to the festival in the future with yet another “to-become-classic-comedy-horror-film”!
The large tent, which has been generously lent to us by Lund University, was filled with colorful and happy people who wanted to come here and celebrate our 15th anniversary with us.

Flädie Mat & Vingård made sure our guests had champagne and something to chew on and, while they waited for the cinema to start, guests mingled with festival coworkers, visitors, industry people and media representatives alike. Everything was discussed; from what previous festivals have been like to what we can expect from the following ten days of fantastis film.

When it was time for the grand opening, our Festival General Lars Diurlin proved to us why he does not make a living out of stand-up comedy. He also took the opportunity to make somewhat of a fool out of himself by dressing himself with...card board? Ah well, the most important part is that he cut the strap so that the festival of 2009 could begin - something we have waited for for months.

We are very pleased to bid you welcome to LIFFF 2009! You'll find the program, tickets and everything you need here at www.fff.se. You can even meet the moviemakers themselves if you attend the right screening.

World Premiere of Psalm 21 at LIFF

Lund International Fantastic Film Festival takes place September 17-26 in Lund and this year marks a magnificent 15 years anniversary. The festival specializing in science fiction, fantasy and horror can now reveal that Fredrik Hiller’s horror film, Psalm 21, will premiere at FFF and the festival will also welcome Hiller and the actors Jonas Malmsjö and Per Ragnar to Lund. The second major Scandinavian film to premiere at FFF is the Danish Deliver us from evil with Ole Bornedal as director and Lene Nystrøm in the cast, bot of whom will be visiting the festival. All guests are available for interviews after agreement.

”We’re extra glad to be able to put the light on two high quality Scandinavian films at FFF. Hiller has done an amazing job with Psalm 21 and the acting is really strong. The film makes us less inclined to think that good Swedish horror was a one-off event with Let the right one in”, says festival director Lars Diurlin.

Psalm 21 tells the story of a young and brilliant Stockholm priest Henrik Horneus, who’s tormented by nightmares about his dead mother. One day he gets a message from the village Borgvattnet in the north that his father, also a priest, has drown under mysterious circumstances, and travels there. Upon arriving he discovers there are powers beyond this world, thirsting for revenge.

Psalm 21 is director, dramatist and actor Fredrik Hiller’s first feature film and was shot in January this year. Starring, are among others, Jonas Malmsjö and Per Ragnar, who we most recently saw in horror film Let the right one in, winner of last year’s Méliès d’Or – the award for best European fantastic film – in Sitges, Spain, FFF:s sister festival. But in order to compete for the Méliès d’Or, the first stop is winning the Méliès d’Argent at one of the European film festivals, and that’s the award Hiller’s film is nominated for at FFF. Both Jonas Malmsjö and Per Ragnar, together with Fredrik Hiller, will visit Lund International Fantastic Film Festival in Lund on September 22-23.

Psalm 21 will world premiere at FFF September 22, 18:30 and won’t be in Swedish theaters until 2010. Interviews with the guests will be held on the same day.

Danish Deliver us from evil will also hae its Swedish premiere at Lund International Fantastic Film Festival. Director Ole Bornedal sent shivers down the spine all over the world in classic thriller Nightwatch, starring Kim Bodnia. Deliver us from evil marks the acting debut for Lene Nystrøm. Mostly famous as singer in the pop band Aqua, Lene has recently launched a successful solo career worldwide.

“In Deliver us from Evil we get to see a perfect example if why pop stars are made for the silver screen. Lene Nystrøm’s debut is splendid and promising and the fact that she’ll visit FFF is definitely all the more exciting for those who grew up with Aqua in the 90’s”, says Lars Diurlin.

Deliver us from Evil takes place during a fateful summer day in a small town in northern Denmark. The escalating tensions in the town finally explodes in a night of violence following the death of popular person. In the middle of this stand two brothers, one a successful lawyer, the other a hopeless alcoholic truck driver. Ole Bornedal has said the wants the film to have an impact on the viewer – something he really succeeds in.

Deliver us from Evil is distributed by Nonstop Entertainment and will have its Swedish premiere at FFF on September 25, 21:00. The film goes up in Swedish theaters on October 2. Interviews with the guests will be held on the same day as the viewing.
