Top Knot Detective

What do you get if you take one part Forgotten Silver (Peter Jackson’s mockumentary about a New Zealand film pioneer), one part Sion Sono and a whole lot of sake? Well then you get Top Knot Detective, a wonderfully entertaining mockumentary about a forgotten Japanese Samurai TV series!

In the early 90s, a little known Japanese Samurai/Detective series hit Australia where it quickly became a cult hit. In Japan it was called ‘Ronin Suiri Tentai’ (Deductive Reasoning Ronin) but in Australia it’s only known as ‘Top Knot Detective’. Created by Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce as a throw-back to th efilms and TV shows that were broadcasted on SBS in the 90s, this mockumentary tells the story of director Takashi Tawagoto, who couldn’t act, fight or write a TV show, but through various underworld connections, he had the money to make himself into a star – or so he thought.

Just the perfect ending to this years festival!
