These final hours

It’s not too often a movie leaves seasoned film programmers nailed to their seats unable to move as the credits roll, but that’s what happened to three of us after the screening of These Final Hours in Berlin earlier this year.

There are 12 hours left of the Earth and we get to experience them through James, a man all set to get to the party to end all parties – but fate and a little girl named Rose get in the way. With this simple premise, Zak Hilditch constructs a violent, bleak and yet at times beautiful tale of redemption, love and determination set against the backdrop of the world coming to an end.

Australia has previously given us such post-apocalyptic gems as the Mad Max trilogy and more recently The Rover, and I would not hesitate to put These Final Hours in the same company.
The film is also very much in the same vein as last year’s acclaimed video game The Last of Us, as well as the series of Walking Dead games put out by Telltale. Fans of these games should really go out of their way not to miss this film – and so should everyone else!
